Oliver!

“Oliver!” is an English musical, with music and lyrics by Lionel Bart. Adapted from Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, the musical stage version tells the tale of an orphan boy who dares to ask for more food at the workhouse where he and his fellow orphans are treated poorly. Oliver is thrown out of the workhouse and, while on the street, encounters the Artful Dodger who takes him under his wing and into the seedy underside of London where he joins a band of pickpockets who are controlled by the criminal Fagin. Eventually Oliver is rescued from his life of crime by a wealthy and kind gentlemen, Mr. Brownlow, who turns out to be Oliver’s grandfather.

The Emperor’s New Clothes

A vain emperor who cares about nothing except his own vanity hires two weavers who try to swindle him by promising to sew him the finest suit of clothes from a invisible “fabric.” Neither the emperor or his ministers can see the clothes, but pretend they can for fear of appearing unfit for their positions. The Emperor does the same. The townsfolk also play along with the pretense, but a simple child in the crowd, upon seeing the naked emperor, blurts out the truth! The Emperor realizes the assertion is true, but stubbornly continues the procession.
